Trailblazer

Today I got a chance to work with another mixed-media piece. This one was made using acrylic paints, thin copper sheeting, a stamp and a word cut from a magazine. I call it trailblazer. I don't know what I think of the collage pieces, but I do think it may help me in my painting, but I'm not sure yet. I changed this today (2/24) - I can't keep my hands off of this piece. It's better now. This is the new photo.

I always have such fun looking at your images enlarged.

There's some cool stuff starting to happen with that copper sheeting. I'm wondering what would happen if you worked into it a little more, and maybe messed around with obscuring its edge, maybe with thicker paint application or additional collage? It might be the obvious the texture of the canvas that's making me think in this direction...

These colors are fabulous!

I don't like this piece much. I may get back to it later, but for now it's abandoned along with my John Sargeant painting and a couple of others. Flops advance me along too though. I don't post all of the flops just some.

Oh, Debi -- I don't even believe in "flops." Every artist I know has a backlog of unfinished pieces they return to for reworking with fresh eyes. That's part of the beauty of painting and collage, I think. You can set it aside when it's not pleasing you, and come back to it at any time. And yes, there's a cumulative learning process -- one that stagnated for me years and years ago, as I put my tools & supplies away & got busy with other things. It's inspiring, good fun to watch others still engaged in the process. I really enjoy coming here.
